The common lilac is best known for its fragrant, tubular flowers that bloom on large, conical panicles that can be between 6-8”. The flowers bloom on old wood and attract birds and butterflies. Pruning should be done after flowering. The common purple lilac prefers full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight), good air circulation, well drained, acidic soil. This lilac is an upright to irregular, multi-stemmed shrub with a moderate growth rate. It is shallow rooted, so a layer of mulch will moderate fluctuations in soil temperature. Some uses are mass, hedge, border and screen plantings.
