Offering season long interest with its dark purple leaves that mature to bronze, this small, rounded shrub also bears a profusion of funnel shaped rose-pink flowers in last spring, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Sparse rebloom sometimes occurs in summer. The handsome, oval leaves are born on arching stems which form a low hummock. Weigela is a tough and easy flowering shrub. For best flowering growth provide these shrubs with full to partial sun and average to fertile soil with good drainage. They look great in mixed borders or as hedges. Prune them back to strong new side shoots in summer after they bloom. Shearing them destroys their natural aching habit.
