A slow-growing, medium-sized evergreen conifer with a narrow, pyramidal shape when young, becoming more rounded and open with age.

Needles are long, soft to the touch, and typically arranged in fascicles of five. They are blue-green in color and feature a deciduous sheath. Cones are short, ovoid to cylindrical, and remain upright on the tree. They emerge greenish-purple when young and mature to a purplish-brown. Cones do not open; instead, they fall to the ground, where seeds are released by birds.

Performs best in full sun to light shade and prefers well-drained, loamy, slightly acidic soil. An excellent choice for use as a specimen or planted in groups in smaller garden settings.
