A medium-sized, slow-growing upright coniferous evergreen with a straight trunk , scruffy habit and a narrow, pointed crown of short, compact, drooping branches with upturned tips. Needles are stiff, four-sided, dark bluish green on the upper sides and paler, glaucous green underneath. Cones are the smallest of all spruces; spindle-shaped to nearly round, dark-purple, ripening to red-brown and are produced in dense clusters in the upper crown. Thrives in full sun to partial shade in cool, moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Suitable for privacy screens, windbreaks or as an accent tree.
