A small- to medium-sized boreal deciduous conifer with a slender trunk, horizontal branches, and drooping branchlets, forming an open pyramidal shape.
Needles are borne spirally on long shoots and in dense clusters on woody spur shoots. They are light blue-green in color, turning a brilliant yellow before dropping in the fall. Cones are small, egg-shaped, and bright red when young, maturing to brown and opening to release seeds.
Prefers full sun and rich, wet to moist, acidic soil. Very cold-tolerant and well suited for naturalized plantings, parks, and wet areas. Also commonly used for bonsai.
