A fast-growing, medium- to large-sized deciduous conifer with long, horizontally spreading primary branches and short, slender, drooping secondary branches. It has a dense, pyramidal form when young, becoming more open and irregular with age.
Needles are blue-green, turning bright yellow in autumn. They are spirally arranged in radial clusters, with multiple lines of stomata on the upper surface and two narrow bands separated by a midrib on the underside.
Cones are erect, ovoid to conical, with reflexed seed scales. They emerge green and mature to brown, remaining on the tree for several years and eventually turning a dull gray-black.
Thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Widely used for bonsai and ornamental plantings in parks and gardens.
