Introduced by North Dakota State University from seed collected in the Killdeer Mountains of western North Dakota, this selection of Betula papyrifera (‘Varen’) is valued for its exceptional white exfoliating bark, outstanding stress tolerance, and excellent resistance to bronze birch borer.
Prairie Dream® develops a semi-pyramidal to upright-oval form when young, gradually maturing into a broader oval canopy with age. Its snow-white bark exfoliates freely to reveal attractive orange inner bark, creating striking year-round interest, particularly when planted against a backdrop of evergreens.
Rich, dark green foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season before turning a brilliant golden-yellow in fall. Prairie Dream® can be grown as either a single-trunk or multi-stemmed specimen, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of landscape applications.
Best grown in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soils, it is also adaptable to a broad range of soil pH conditions.

When ordering tray material, any 38 Ct and 50 Ct Evergreen Gro Plugs or 18 Ct cell liner trays, the order quantity must be in full tray increments.
Example
- 7 trays of 50 Ct Gro Plugs would be 350 plants on the order line.
- 5 trays of 18 Ct trays would be 90 plants on the order line.
All bare root birch single stem must be ordered in increments of 10.
