A slow-growing, small to medium-sized evergreen tree with a rounded, dense, spreading crown that becomes more open and flat-topped with age. Needles are single, sharp-tipped, thick and curved, gray-green in color with stomatal lines over all surfaces. Cones are egg-shaped with a few thick scales, green when young, turning a pale yellow-brown as they mature and release the beloved edible pine nut seed. Thrives in well-drained, sandy or rocky soils with full sun exposure. Highly drought-tolerant once established. Create visual interest as a single specimen or grouped together for a screen or windbreak.
