A large evergreen conifer with a moderate growth rate, pyramidal in shape when young, shedding its lower branches over time and developing an irregular, open, conical crown with age.
Needles are long, thin, and dark yellowish-green, growing in dense, tuft-like fascicles of two or three. Cones are oval-shaped, pointed, and prickly, ranging from reddish-brown to grayish-brown. At maturity, they turn downward to release seed.
Prefers full sun and grows best in average, medium-moisture, well-drained sandy or loamy soils. Well suited for use in parks, large recreational areas, or as a windbreak species.
