A moderate- to fast-growing, medium-sized evergreen conifer with a conical to columnar shape, developing an open, rounded, and somewhat irregular crown as it matures.

Needles are short, stiff, and serrated, often slightly twisted with a flattened surface, and blue-green in color. They are arranged in fascicles of two. Cones are ovoid to conical, emerging green and maturing to gray-green to yellow-brown. The scales bear a flat to pyramidal apophysis with a small prickle on the umbo.

Performs best in rich, moist, well-drained soil and full sun. Commonly used as a Christmas tree or as a specimen tree in residential or park landscapes.
