A slow-growing, medium-sized evergreen conifer with a narrow, pyramidal shape when young, becoming more rounded and open with age. Needles are long, soft to touch, typically arranged in fascicles of five, blue-green in color with a deciduous sheath. Cones are short, ovoid or cylindrical, remain upright on the tree and are greenish-purple when young, maturing to a purplish-brown. Cones do not open but instead fall to the ground for seed release by birds. Prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained, loamy, slightly acidic soil. Excellent when planted in smaller gardens as a specimen or group.
