A medium-sized, slow-growing, upright evergreen conifer with a straight trunk, somewhat scruffy habit, and a narrow, pointed crown of short, compact, drooping branches with upturned tips.
Needles are stiff, four-sided, and dark bluish-green on the upper surfaces, with a paler, glaucous green underside. Cones are the smallest of all spruces, ranging from spindle-shaped to nearly round. They emerge dark purple, ripen to red-brown, and are produced in dense clusters in the upper crown.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers cool, moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Suitable for privacy screens, windbreaks, or as an accent tree.
