A moderately-growing, large evergreen tree with a narrowly pyramidal crown cloaked in pendulous foliage. Needles are rhombic in cross-section, spreading radially, dark green in color with inconspicuous stomatal lines. Cones are cylindrical-conic with moderately stiff, smoothly rounded scales, purple when young, maturing to dark brown. Thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic soil and full sun to partial shade. Uses include specimen plantings in large gardens and parks, groupings or windbreaks.
