A medium-sized evergreen conifer with a moderate growth rate, conical shape, straight trunk, and horizontal to ascending branches, forming an oval to rounded crown.

Needles are long, sharply pointed, and brittle, borne in fascicles of two, and are dark yellow-green in color. Cones are symmetrical and ovoid, with scales lacking spines or prickles. They develop a purple hue before maturity and ripen to a nutty blue tone as they open.

This species is intolerant of shade but performs well in windy sites. Grows best in full sun and moist, sandy, acidic, well-drained soil. Well suited for windbreaks, slope stabilization, and adding visual interest to the landscape.
