Cones are oval-shaped, pointed and prickly with a reddish-brown to grayish-brown color, turning upside down at maturity to release seed. Prefers full sun and grows best in average, medium-moisture, well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. Suitable for use in parks, large recreational areas or as a windbreak species.
